Meet the Miners at St Hilda's Pit Head, South Shields

St. Hildas Pithead, St. Hilda Industrial Estate, Station Road, South Shields, Tyne & Wear, NE33 1RA

  • 11 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

Only St Hilda's Pit Head remains of St Hilda's Colliery, which earned its place in history for its 1899 disaster leading to candles being outlawed in all pits. Meet ex-miners to find out what life was like working in the mines in the 20th century.

Join us at St Hilda's Pit Head for an opportunity to speak to former miners and find out what life was like in the South Shields pits of the 20th century.

The Pit Head comprises winding and pump houses, which survived the closure and clearance of the main pit in
1940, being used for ventilation and emergency access to neighbouring Westoe Colliery, so it's also a great chance to come and see the equipment that helped fuel the nation throughout the centuries.
