Meet LADIA - the Lowestoft And District Independent Archive

Old Court Buildings, Old Nelson Street, Lowestoft, Suffolk, NR32 1UR

  • 12 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

A unique opportunity to see a small sampling of some of the growing collection of historic documents, maps and images currently held by the new community archives group, LADIA, in Lowestoft.

The Lowestoft And District Independent Archives group was founded in 2022 in the wake of the decision by Suffolk County Council to close their Lowestoft Record Office branch and remove all of the original archives to Ipswich. Six local history enthusiasts felt this was unacceptable and have established a viable alternative at the Old Law courts Buildings in Lowestoft, where the former Magistrates Courts rolling archives room now serves as a repository for a treasure trove of local historic documents, maps and images.
The rolling archives room is not normally open to members of the public but special access is being granted for the purpose of "connecting" to local history for this year's HODs event and to raise awareness of the group.
There will also be a mini-exhibition featuring copies of some documents and pictures relating to the National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen and other interesting aspects of Waveney area history. Local heritage works by "connecting" people with their own archival history and now there is a viable alternative to a trip to Ipswich.
