42 Melbourne Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk, NR32 1SS

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person

Welcome to Mark Burrell's Open Studios 2024. This is an excellent opportunity to view the award winning artists paintings, as part of Lowestoft's Sea fest. Real, imagined, and magical realism. See the environment where they are created. All welcome.

Born in Lowestoft in Suffolk, Mark is an established painter, who has been making art for over forty years. He is a leading member of ‘The North Sea Magical Realists’ with work appearing on television seven times. Interestingly, he was interviewed by the popular Sister Wendy Beckett on Anglia Television’s ‘Moving Art’ program hosted by George Melly, where Mark’s work was awarded ‘first prize’ and highly commended by Bill Oddie. In London, he won the Lucy Morrison Memorial Prize at the Royal Overseas League and had work exhibited in 'The House of Commons', and 'The Royal Academy'. In 2021, Mark was shortlisted for the Sir John Hurt art prize and more recently, wrote and illustrated his first children's book 'Bertie by the Beach'. Signed copies will be available as well as the illustrations exhibited in his studio.

This is a lovely way to spend an afternoon; to browse and if you want, purchase original paintings, high-quality limited-edition prints, cards, and books. This is an open studio event in which the artist invites the public to visit their studio and display spaces.

Additional information

Recently published in 2023, 'Bertie by the Beach' is Marks first fully written and illustrated children's book. Mark describes the book as a magical rhyming story about a little crab called 'Bertie' and his mermaid friends who live by the sea. This story is playful and optimistic, with a subtle message about the importance of people, diversity, kindness, community and friendship. 'Original Bertie paintings' will be on display, with the opportunity to purchase signed copies of the book, as well as 'Bertie Greeting Cards' and 'Bertie Limited Edition Prints!'.
