Malling Deanery Arboretum tour
St Michael the Archangel Church, Church Lane, Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 2JL
Visit one of Lewes’ best kept secrets and explore the best discovery of the Friends of Lewes recently-completed tree survey, as part of its Urban Arboretum project. The South Malling arboretum is a private arboretum located in part of the grounds to the former Malling Deanery. It was largely planted in the 1970’s and has a wide variety of interesting and unusual trees, anchored by a venerable black poplar. It is a unique and attractive collection in a beautiful and peaceful setting near St Michael’s church at the bottom of Church Lane.
The walk will be led by Keith Sacre who amongst his many qualifications holds a MSc in Arboriculture and Urban Forestry, a BSc in Arboriculture, a BSc in Social Science, and a post graduate diploma in management studies. He is currently a director at Barcham Trees, the largest container tree nursery in Europe and he a co-founded Treeconomics. He is a member and trustee of the Trees and Design Action Group and a trustee of the UK Arboricultural Association and is a previous chair of the Association. Keith has over 30 years of experience in the nursery industry and was the lead author of the UK British Standard Trees: From Nursery to Independence in the Landscape published in 2014. Prior to working in the nursery industry, he spent several years managing and developing public open space in the local authority sector. Keith has travelled extensively across the world viewing both nursery practice and urban forestry management.

The walk is unsuitable for people with mobility issues as it involves uneven ground. All participants are requested to wear stout and waterproof footwear and have protective clothing should inclement weather be encountered. Much of the site has established ground vegetation and therefore for everyone's comfort it is recommended that the temptation to wear shorts is resisted.
