A signalman was a responsible job with a huge safety role. Between the wars, there were around 15,000 signal boxes, and this is a way of life that has almost completely disappeared. Learn how the equipment worked and how it developed to prevent repetitions of railway accidents. You are welcome to try your hand pulling the levers or ringing the block bell.
See what we have done to restore the box to its condition in the 1950s.
For Heritage Open Days we are going to run signalling demonstrations with 5 virtual trains passing the box in just over half an hour, with one running late which will make a lot of extra work for the signalman as he has to shunt a slower train for an express train to pass.
