Lodge of Prudence - Halesworth
Market Place, Halesworth, Suffolk, IP19 8BB
The Lodge of Prudence is one of the 10 oldest Masonic Lodges in Suffolk and has been meeting in Halesworth since 1827. It met in a number of locations throughout Halesworth until 1880 when it first met in the current Masonic Hall. The building was formerly a warehouse for the nearby departmental store, Roe & Co (which traded in Halesworth until the 1960's).
The building contains a number of interesting and unusual artifacts which may be unique to the lodge itself. These include the Master's Chair which dates from 1794, the Warden's chairs which date from 1856 and the pedestals which were originally made for the Provincial Grand Lodge meeting which took place in Henham Hall in 1907.
As well as the lodge furniture there are a number of interesting and unusual tracing cloths on display which are believed to date back to the 18th century and may have been in use when the lodge first met.
It should be noted that the lodge room is located on the first floor of the building and can only be accessed via a steep staircase.
