Liskeard Unlocked - Westbourne House
Westbourne House, West Street, Liskeard, Cornwall, PL14 6BY
Built in 1816 for solicitor N.W. Penrose, the house was one of the grandest in town, with gardens that spanned to what is now Westbourne Car Park, with two connecting footbridges. In the latter part of the 19th century, it was owned by Richard Hawke, then the wealthiest man in Liskeard.
Visitors can expect to see the conservation work blended with modern technology, enjoy time in the garden and see a visual history of the house and occupants. There is a memorial to Richard Hawke in the garden.
This a rare chance to view the creation of high-tech offices while preserving architectural features in a Georgian building. This fine 1816 property was overlooked for many years as local council budgets were squeezed. Now Wildanet Ltd, a high-speed broadband provider, has taken a 25-year lease on the building, it has created a modern workspace for its employees, whilst preserving many original features such as fireplaces, stained glass windows and the impressive grand staircase. In addition, Wildanet has built an academy, to train network engineers of the future.
There will be free refreshments available.
