Licorice Fields at Pontefract installation

Friarwood Valley Gardens, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, WF8 1PL

Pontefract Civic Society is proud to partner Friends of Friarwood Valley Gardens in the unveiling of an 'installation' in tribute to the Betjeman poem 'Licorice Fields at Pontefract'.

John Betjeman was poet laureate of the UK from 1972, until his death in 1984 and his poetry evoked a sense of nostalgia.
The 'Licorice Fields at Pontefract' poem celebrates a romantic encounter that he apparently had when he visited Pontefract, experiencing our liquorice fields.
Fittingly the unveiling of the tribute will take place in Friarwood Valley Gardens, a place that has long been associated with the growing of liquorice.
