Lace Connections Store Tour

Celebrate Heritage Open Days 30th anniversary with a sneak peek behind the scenes at our developing off-site storage facility. Visitors will tour three units, containing, industrial history, social history and archaeology collections, with the Curator of Human History. We will investigate the sometimes unexpected connections between the world renown Nottingham lace industry and the city's major industrial heritage. You will have the opportunity to see the newly installed Nottingham built Swift & Wass curtain lace machine, the largest object in the collection, some of the founding collections from the Indian Salon, at the 1878 Paris Exhibition, purchased to inspire the local lace designers and material from Raleigh, Cropper, Players and others, with strong connections to the lace industry. Other highlights from the reserve lace collections, such as examples of Nottingham lace, lace designs and machine tools and equipment, will also be available to view. While the earlier, framework knitting and hosiery industry, from which the world's first first lace machines emerged, are also represented in the stores. If you have seen our Lace Galleries at the Industrial Museum and Nottingham Castle, this will provide yet another insight into the richness and importance of the lace industry to the city and beyond. The stores are located in the Bobbers Mill area of Nottingham, exact details of the location are issued to those who book a tour. The Saturday tours will be shorter in duration.

Please email [email protected] to book you place, giving your preferred date and time. Any visitors over and above the limit for any of the tours will be put on a waiting list. Those who find they cannot attend, after a booking is confirmed, are asked to email back, so that their place may be reallocated. Please note that the Saturday tours will be 30 minutes shorter, due to the entrance gate closures.

Accessibility details

Parents should keep younger visitors with them at all times. Visitors are asked not to touch the exhibits unless invited to do so. There is a mezzanine with a mesh floor in the final unit, with steps for access. If you wish to keep your modesty, wearing trousers is recommended, as not all visitors may want to come upstairs and those below will be exploring underneath. Likewise flat shoes are also recommended. Photographs of the display storage on the mezzanine can be provided for those who can use the staircase.
