Journey through light - Stained Glass Windows of Barnett and Hardman

We have over 60 beautiful stained glass windows in the church of Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Michael and a team of very enthusiastic volunteers who have been busy researching the history behind these windows. The church holds many beautiful items dating back to the 15th centuary alabaster reliefs from Jervaulx Abbey and the stained glass dedicated to these reliefs. Come and journey with us through time to discover the history behind each window, when it was installed and who paid for them. Many of which were paid for by the working families of Workington , be they miners or local retailers. They were all touched by the same tradegies of the early 20th Century , flu epidemics , mining disasters etc. The Tours will consist of a talk by Lizzie Plassom-Scott on the origin's of stained glass and also looking at the distinctive works of Barnett of Leith and Hardman of Birmingham and the close relationship they had with the architect, E.W. Pugin and his family. A very warm welcome by our team of volunteers and a chance to look round the beautiful grounds which hold two of the orignal miners cottages from around 1800. Refreshments will be available in the Stella Maris room together with some activities for children. Please come along and enjoy discovering this hidden gem tucked away in West Cumbria.

There is an overflow car park available at the end of St Michaels road, Workington. Put CA14 3EZ into your sat nav - Car park is located at the end of the road on the right hand side. Adjacent to the entrance to St Joseph's school. The car park will be well sign posted

Wheelchair access to the church is around the back side of the church - via the Nun's entrance Someone will be on hand at the main entrance to direct you to this.

There is an overflow car park to the rear of the church. This is accessed via St Michaels road (CA14 3EZ for Sat Nav) the entrance is at the end of the road on the right hand side through double gates - this will be clearly signposted
