Jesmond Old Cemetery, Jesmond Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE2 1NL

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

Join the Friends of Jesmond Old Cemetery on one of our heritage tours, where we visit some of the final resting places of the famous, and not so famous, men and women who contributed so much to the history of Newcastle, the North East and beyond.

Jesmond Old Cemetery is a beautiful and unique garden cemetery - a sacred space and an urban oasis, with so much to offer the visitor, particularly in terms of the culture, heritage and history contained within the Grade 2 Listed walls; add to this the beautiful biodiversity that exists within JOC and you have the perfect incentive for spending a couple of hours with us. So, come and join the Friends of Jesmond Old Cemetery on one of our Heritage Open Day tours, where we will take you on an informative meander through the monuments, sharing our knowledge, passion and stories with you.
Each and every tour is different, so even if you have been on one of our tours previously, come along again and find out something new.
After the tours are completed, visitors are welcome to join us for tea, coffee, cake and a chat......how lovely.

Accessibility details

Jesmond Old Cemetery was designed by John Dobson as a 'Garden Cemetery' and, as such, has little in the way of established footpaths. It consists mainly of uneven grassed pathways so, unfortunately, wheelchair users and people who are unsteady on their feet will find the tours a challenge. All attendees are advised to wear stout footwear and to dress appropriately for the weather.

Additional information

People have, in the past, got a little mixed up about which cemetery to attend as there are two on Jesmond Road; Jesmond Old Cemetery's high stone walls should be instantly recognisable and are in marked contrast to the open metal railings of the adjacent All Saint's Cemetery, so this should help you find us!! All attendees are asked to meet us at the South Lodge, which is next to the Sandyford Road entrance to Jesmond Old Cemetery. The Friends will all be wearing hi-vis vests, so we will be really easy to recognise.
