Founder Peppino Santangelo came to the City in 1924 to join the Hull Repertory Company based at the Little Theatre Kingston Square. After turning the struggling company around, he turned his attention to the Assembly Rooms next door. Peppino thought the venue could be a new home for the company.

At the same time, he realised that the Little Theatre's other neighbour Hull Central Fire Station needed more space so he suggested a swap. The Little Theatre for the assembly rooms - and the deal was done for £9,000.

Today, a huge £15.9m revamp of the venue has now been completed. The work is the biggest project undertaken in the theatre's history. There are major improvements to backstage areas including a new fly tower, used for scenery, lighting and stage effects.
These improvements will allow the theatre to stage bigger, more ambitious shows, in line with its reputation as one of the leading touring theatres in the UK.
