Huddersfield Gasworks – a final glimpse
Gas Works Street, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, HD1 6AF
The Huddersfield Gas Co was founded in 1821, initially to provide street lighting, and operated privately until acquired by Huddersfield Corporation in 1872. The one surviving gasholder was put up in 1916. Staff of Northern Gas Networks will guide small groups around the perimeter of the site (stout shoes recommended), followed by illustrated presentations and displays in the site office, explaining how the gasholder was built, how it worked and how it will now be demolished. A leaflet prepared by Huddersfield Local History Society will explain the history of the town’s gasworks over two centuries, and a diorama of the site will be on display too.

The site has been redundant for some years and therefore rough under foot in parts: stout shoes are recommended.
