How the Other Half Lived

Guildhall, Sandhill, Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE1 3AF

  • 06 Sep 2024
  • In person

This walk explores Newcastle’s’ historic Quayside area where the poor lived and worked in squalid and unsanitary conditions. You will hear stories about gross overcrowding, grinding poverty, poor houses and a soup kitchen

Sandhill was the centre of thriving Newcastle from medieval times until the 18th Century. Its name is said to drive from the original “hill of naked sand” which eventually became reclaimed from the tidal sand of the Tyne. In Sandhill rich and poor lived cheek by jowl, the oldest part of
town. By the mid 18th Century wealthy residents began to move away from the riverside because of the noise, pollution, overcrowding and industry, they migrated to the more fashionable (and cleaner) parts of developing Newcastle leaving the Sandhill and Quayside to the poor.
