We are creating a map, based on the first edition of the OS 1” to show how far people had to travel to worship at the oldest Independent Chapel in the county, as there was nowhere else for them to go. We are using our Baptism Records dated 1706-1835,

Walpole Old Chapel is the oldest Independent Chapel in Suffolk and the second oldest in the country. When it became a chapel in 1689 there was nowhere else for dissenting people to go if they wanted to worship together. Thus, they had to travel for miles across country at a time when there were no roads, not even a Turnpike until the mid-18th century. Using data from our Baptism Records, which date from 1706-1835, we are creating a map, based on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey to show how people they travelled to worship. We invite visitors to marvel at the congregation’s tenacity and share their journey of how they arrived to visit the chapel on Heritage Open Day
