Holy Trinity Church

The tower of Holy Trinity was built by the Anglo-Saxons around 1000 AD and features a small west doorway and considerable quantities of recycled Roman bricks. Later additions to the church include the 14th-century chancel and Victorian extensions. It is the burial place of several famous people including William Gilberd (1544-1603), a pioneering Elizabethan scientist, and John Wilbye (1574-1638), a composer of madrigals or love songs. In the churchyard is the grave of the Battle of Trafalgar veteran Capt. Thomas Pinto RN (1774-1852), who, as a lieutenant, served aboard HMS Agamemnon. The church closed in 1953 and has had a variety of uses since. It is currently not open to the public. Only the churchyard will be accessible this year and a local guide will be on hand to describe the building.

Other buildings open nearby for Heritage Open Days on the same dates are the Roman Theatre, 7 Queen Street, St Giles Masonic Centre, Grey Friars, The Minories, St James the Great Church and St John's Abbey Gatehouse. There are also guided walks on both 7th and 8th September which start in Colchester city centre.
