Historic Aston Parish Church open day

This is one of Birmingham’s iconic buildings
See over 6 centuries of monument to the people who changed the area. Learn about industrial giants including Joseph Ansell, discover the Aston man who was the first to translate the complete Bible from the original Greek into English and was burnt at the stake. Find the monuments to William Shakespeare’s mother’s family (Arden). See the new monument made by the community to two local women killed in a gun battle at a New Year’s party in 2003.

12 30 – Open
13 00 – Talk – East window by Hardmans 1889. The East window is mentioned in the statutory listing. Why? Meet in the chancel
14 00 – Talk - John Rogers (1500 – 1555) protestant martyr meet at his memorial
15 00 – Tower trip – Climb the refurbished 99 steps to the battlements, learn to chime a church bell. Numbers limited Free tickets available on the day. Meet inside the south door.
15 30 – Exhibition of Hidden heritage, an early 18th century brass plaque recently interpreted by the Castle Bromwich Local History Group. The Feeney memorial by Sir George Frampton (1901). Meet in the Erdington Chapel
16 00 Church yard tour – Wear good shoes to see the memorials to the Ansell (brewer) family, James Crabtree an Aston Villa star player, Alfred Wilcox VC, Henry Johnson and others. Meet at the South door
16 30 – Talk - William Shakespeare’s Aston connection (1360 to 1627). Meet at the Kathleen Arden memorial.

Directions:

Car Parking is available in the cul de sac in front of the church, access from Aston Hall Road. Aston Tavern is next to the church. There is a dropped curb. Car Parking is also available at Aston Hall. Aston station is a 5 minute walk: it has 4 trains per hour to and from Birmingham New Street on a Sunday. Bus 65 and 67 from the City Centre call at Aston Station. Bus no 7 and 11 (Outer Circle) call at Witton Square - walk along Witton Lane.

Accessibility details

The church building is fully accessible. The tower has a 99 step spiral staircase. The churchyard has some 'wilded' areas and steps.

Additional information

Refreshments, toilets and seating areas will be available all day. The presentations are informal and are scheduled to last 15 minutes including questions. The tower tour including visiting the battlements can be up to 45 minutes. No refreshments are available at Aston Hall.
