Highcliffe Castle Guided Tours
Rothesay Drive, West Borough, Highcliffe, Dorset, BH23 4LE
Volunteer tour guides tell the fascinating history of the Castle. This guided tour includes the wine cellars and upper floors in areas not normally available to view. The Castle's romantic Gothic Revival style is largely due to the medieval masonry shipped from France. The ‘Jesse Window’ is made from French medieval stained glass, and the central panel is believed to have come from a church in Rouen. Two devastating fires in the 1960s rendered the building derelict, but in 1977, it was purchased by Christchurch Borough Council, and a programme of repairs was begun with the support of English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
