High Royds: connecting to the lost world of a Victorian Asylum.

High Royds Memorial Chapel and Garden, Buckle Lane, Menston, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS29 6DG

  • 08 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

This walk led by local historian Clive Woods will trace how a rural landscape was transformed into a Victorian asylum and subsequently a residential development.

We will explore the magnificent buildings of the 1880s and the problems and disappointments on the path to residential development following the hospital's closure in 2004. If time permits there will be a brief look at the surrounding countryside as the site was partly chosen due to its isolation. The Memorial Garden and Chapel is the final resting place of 2861 former patients. It lay derelict for many years but was restored by the Friends of High Royds Memorial Garden in 2010. The Chapel contains a photographic archive of former staff and patients as well as some of the interiors including the grand Ballroom.
