Hexham Abbey

Visitors will be able to explore two free exhibitions and one area of the Abbey previously unseen. These include:
Drawings from Hexham Abbey's local antiquarian and former resident architect, Charles Clement Hodges. No single person contributed more to the internal appearance of the Abbey as it is known today. The Abbey has a good collection of his meticulous drawings, some on a very large scale, and many never exhibited before. A selection of these, together with his written works, including his great Monograph on the Abbey, will form an exhibition to celebrate his achievements;
The current Song School is used for rehearsals by today's Hexham Abbey Choir and built on the former monks' dormitory. This space will be open to view on Saturday 7 and 14 September;
A beautiful altar frontal designed by Leonard Evetts and completed in 1996 will be displayed in the Etheldreda Chapel. This frontal was commissioned in memory of Doris Jackson for the Lady Chapel altar and to remember those who gave their lives in the Great War (1914-1918). Also on display will be St Andrew's Cope which was commissioned for the Queen's visit in 1974 and the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) Chasuble.
