Heritage, Sustainability and Education at Great St Mary's

This is a chance to tour the building and hear about its history, including how it has been rebuilt and refurbished over the years, the part those who worshipped and preached here played in the Reformation, and royal encounters with the church. You will be able to take a close look at our 19th and 20th century stained glass, church furnishings, and galleries (complete with 17th century pews).

Alongside having a colourful history, the church is a place of living faith in the present day. This year we have begun an Education Programme, where our aim is to educate not only about Christian heritage and faith but also sustainability, which – as an Eco Church – we see as a vital part of our faith. Our Education Officer and Church Warden will tell you more about this exciting new work, including our outreach to schools and other educational groups, and what we have learned so far about how faith can positively influence people to make sustainable decisions. We welcome collaboration with community groups and individuals, so this is the perfect chance to find out more.

There will be an opportunity to climb the 123 steps to the top of our tower at a special discounted rate following the main event.

The main church entrance is accessible to wheelchairs and other mobility aids. It is unfortunately not possible to access the galleries, tower or St Andrew's Chapel in a wheelchair.
