Heritage of St Laurence's Church and the community of Adwick le Street
St Laurence's Church, Village Street, Adwick le Street, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN6 7AD
Church will be open for an informal visit to view the medieval architecture and artifacts and displays of local history
We are planning a photographic exhibition of local history and local churches past and present.
We are hoping to have a talk from a local historian about the local area
There will be handouts detailing walking and driving routes to other local churches in our partnership with public transport details about our great rail connection into and out of Doncaster city centre. Trains every half hour taking just 9 mins. All part of our contribution to the theme "networks, routes and connections"
We have historic links with the Washington Family who lived in Adwick Mano .
Under one of the arches between the North chapel and the chancel there is an alter tomb with an alabaster slab which is a memorial to James Washington, who died in 1580, his wife Margaret and their children.
Engraved on the tomb are the portraits of James Washington in Elizabethan armour and elaborate collar, his wife in a fashionable dress with a small ruff, and their 12 kneeling children.
On the knights breast is the Washington shield with the stars and stripes, which were thus in this place long before they were on the American flag.
