Hebble Trail Tour

Salterhebble Basin, Lockkeepers Cottage, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX3 0QH

  • 11 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

Join us on our new guided Hebble Trail walk, starting at Salterhebble Basin following the route of the old Halifax Branch Canal towards Bailey Hall in Halifax Town Centre. Walk the former canal's length as the route climbs 100ft over 1 ½ miles

Listen to how the canal became vital to the survival of the industrial heritage of Halifax in its role as a manufacturing town. Having had mills along the brook’s bank since 1500s, the industrial revolution generated the need for heavier machinery together with large amounts of fuel and raw materials. Production rates soared and the ability to transport finished goods was critical to maintain prosperity. By the time it opened in 1828 this link between the Calder and Hebble Navigation Canal to the centre of Halifax had become essential.

Hear the story of how the canal came to be built under the direction of resident engineer Thomas Bradley. Learn how the town’s merchants and famous investors, amongst them John Waterhouse and Anne Lister, funded the build to high specification using a pumphouse and side ponds, serving as a method of water conservation, despite concerns from mill owners.

Find out how the canal declined, closed in 1942, was rejuvenated as a nature trail by Calderdale Council in the 1980s and will form part of Phase 4 of Calderdale Next Chapter in the near future.

Halifax Heritage Tours CIC has been set up and is run by volunteers who are passionate about the heritage of Halifax. Any donations will be put towards community and education projects to promote and preserve the heritage of Halifax.

The limited places can fill up quickly, so its worth booking early!
