Heavens Above! What on earth did monks do?

Different monastic orders had different purposes. Some were teachers and preachers like the Augustinians. Some were hospitallers offering hospitality, care and welfare. Some were soldiers like the Knights Templars. And some were contemplatives, spending their time in prayer, contemplation and study. The Cistercians of Byland Abbey belonged to this last group.

So on this guided tour, we will look at how this worked out in practice. We will explore the different buildings and spaces and see how they were used by the monks. We will look at their daily routine centred on the Rule of Benedict and answer the question why choose this way of life.

Byland Abbey, Coxwold, York, North Yorkshire, YO61 4BD

Directions:

Parking: There is a small, triangular-shaped car park with room for about 9 cars available. Please beware of quick-moving passing cars. Toilets: Facilities can be found to the rear of the Abbey Inn, opposite the car park. Byland Abbey Museum: The museum at Byland Abbey is opened by a team of volunteers, allowing public access to view a collection that explores further the story of the abbey. Volunteers will normally be on site from 1pm to 5pm every Friday to Monday. During this time the museum and second-hand bookshop with be open. Tiles: Please note that the medieval tiles of Byland Abbey are covered for their protection in the colder months. Unfortunately, during this time it is not possible to view the tiles.
