Heather, Hay, Houses, Health - Guided Walk
Horton Road, Ashley Heath, Dorset, BH24 2EJ
Starting at "the longest railway halt" in Britain, and finishing at "the smallest High Street", there will be stops to consider various subjects including the natural history of the Great Southern Heath, the dramatic impact of the Victorian railway system, and what remains of the original roads and buildings designed and built by William Webb, the so-called "Father of Ashley Heath". Webb (1862-1930), a Surrey estate agent already well known for his successful 'Garden First' housing development on the edge of South London, moved to Bournemouth in 1920, bought 1500 acres of heathland near Ringwood, and began to build the 'Hampshire Heath Garden Estate'. His book 'Heather Hay Houses Health' was published in 1929 to explain his vision for the new village.
