Headingley Methodist Church Open Day - As Time Goes By on the Otley Road

1-3 Chapel Street, Headingley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS6 3HZ

  • 07 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

You are welcome to visit one of the oldest church buildings in Headingley. See the church and its garden, view our exhibition about Otley Road over the past 200 years and reminisce about bygone shops and buildings. Enjoy home-made refreshments.

For Heritage Open Days this year, we are opening our 179 year-old church on Saturday September 7th from 1000-1300. We invite you to come to explore the church and its treasures. Spend some time looking around the church with its original pews and pulpit, organ and church mice, and in visiting rooms behind the church and in the gallery, which are not usually open to the public. We have a quiz sheet for children and our volunteers will be on hand for information. You can also explore outside the church, where we continue to develop a wildlife friendly garden.

Thinking about this year's HODs theme, we delved in our archives to create, with local colleagues, an exhibition of photographs celebrating the main road along which our members have travelled to church. There are photos of the Otley Road over two centuries; showing its shops and buildings as they changed during the time the church has stood in its present position. These offer a great perspective on the social history and development of our local community, and we’d love to hear your experiences and memories of the shops, cafes and social life in Headingley over the years.

In our church cafe, our volunteers will serve delicious homemade refreshments and drinks on a Pay As You Feel basis from 1000 to 1200.
Please come in either through the church garden from Otley Road up the front steps of the main church door or via our fully accessible entrance at the middle door on Chapel Street.
