Haslar Royal Naval Cemetery
51 Clayhall Road, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 2BB
Gather in the Chapel to first enjoy a brief oral history of Haslar Hospital and the origins of its cemeteries from the opening of the Hospital to the present day, with photographs displayed in the mortuary chapel. Next, take an informative walk through the cemetery where the guide will detail the many historic events and stories linking the listed monuments and graves, the Royal Navy, and Gosport. Gosport and ‘Turk Town’, why has our old town got this name? Could the mystery be solved by looking at the Turkish graves that lie here? The cemetery is a Site of Special Scientific Interest full of wonderful trees and other flora and in September our very special 'Autumn's Lady's Tresses', a beautiful tiny Orchid will be seen in abundance. Lying alongside Alver Lake the cemetery is a Haven of peace and tranquillity. Lots to see, touch and hear, plus time for peaceful contemplation too. Perhaps a time to reflect and thank the many hundreds who are buried in War Graves here. If you have an interest in our naval history and the part Gosport's seamen and submariners played, then this event could be for you!
