Halifax "Old Borough Magistrates Court and Central Police Station"
The Old Courthouse, Black Wall entrance, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX1 2DL
Built to replace the court and cells at the Town Hall and designed by local architects, George Buckley & Sons, this characterful building opened on 29th October 1900.
Explore the newly converted courts, private chambers and assembly rooms to hear about people who worked and individuals brought to justice here. Admire the grandeur of the architectural features, including beautiful stained-glass windows, stone and wood carvings ornamented with coats of arms and images linked to folklore. You’ll be given an insight into the workings of the Magistrates Court and Police Station, hear about some of the court customs and protocol, the building’s history and touch upon some of the cases and famous visitors throughout Halifax’s legal heritage.
Witness the incredible, award-winning transformation of this building from being a redundant Courthouse to the sympathetically converted home of Calderdale Music, a state of the art, dedicated music and performance space. You can even treat yourself to some refreshments in the Rhythm & Brews café here when the tour finishes.
Halifax Heritage Tours CIC has been set up and is run by volunteers who are passionate about the heritage of Halifax. Any donations received will be put towards community and education projects to promote and preserve the heritage of Halifax.
