Guided Visits to Heald Well and St Mary’s Well - Clitheroe Conservation Area

An on site presentation at two of Clitheroe’s three Pre-Norman, Pendle Hill fed, former Public Well Sites and the significance of this connection, and the sites to the town's development - from Earl Loefric's Mercia to the Industrial Revolution.

There will be visits to two of Clitheroe’s three, Pre-Norman spring well sites - and the Tudor structures which now enclose them. Presentations at both sites will illustrate the significance enormous significance of potable water, its ‘routes’ - from the high Pendle Hill fells to the east of the town - and the significance of this ‘connection’ to its residents for over 1000 years.

Visitors will learn how these artesian spring well sites delivered potable water through the combined imaginative use of natural and man-made resources which were vital to Clitheroe’s development from its Pre-Norman location within C10th Mercia (ruled by Earl Leofric - Lady Godiva’s husband) until the mid- C19th First Industrial Revolution.

This HOD 2024 tour will not cover Clitheroe’s third Pre-Norman site - Stock Well. HOD Visitors wishing to visit this site will be directed to it and provided with detailed information about it. Time constraints will not permit an accompanied visit with a CTWCC representative to Stock Well.

These attended visit are designed to promote a better appreciation of the significance of the ancient sites and assist this Campaign to secure a lasting and meaningful future for all three of this Listed Grade II, Heritage Assets at the heart of Clitheroe’s Conservation Area.

The attended visit will commence at Heald Well in Wellgate Clitheroe. The well is directly in front of the Dog & Partridge Inn and to the to the west of Wellgate Fisheries and the postcode is BB7 2DS. The second site is St Mary’s Well located in Well Terrace in front of Clitheroe Royal Grammar School and the postcode is BB7 2AG. There are no specific access restrictions. This is a town Centre located event accessible via publicly adopted roads and footpaths with all the implications and responsibilities of such a location. The two sites to be visited are un-adopted and access into both well enclosures is via steps without the benefit of handrails.
