Guided tours of 78 Derngate
78 Derngate, Northampton, Northamptonshire, NN1 1UH
Multi-award winning 78 Derngate was the marital home of local businessman, WJ Bassett-Lowke between 1917-1926.
He commissioned the famous Glaswegian architect, artist and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, to remodel the house and some original features remain in situ, together with meticulous replica interior schemes and furniture. Mackintosh was one of the most individual and creative designers of the twentieth century. Bassett-Lowke was the founder of a prosperous model-making business and was recognised as one of Mackintosh’s most demanding, yet progressive patrons.
Visitors will be given guided tours round each floor of the house with a chance for questions along the way. With a brand new extension to the adjoining buildings and extended gardens, there is a lot to see alongside this fantastic heritage house and we are very lucky to be able to show this off to visitors from all over the world. As Eric Knowles once said: “A gem of a house in a jewel of a town.”
Galleries, gardens and shop also open.
