  • 06 Sep 2024

Discover the fascinating history of Scotswood's railway network.

The Newcastle to Carlisle railway which used to run through Scotswood was the first east-west line in the country. Later a loop was added connecting Scotswood to Newburn and Wylam. By the 1960s these railways had closed but substantial remains of their history can still be seen. This tour will visit the site of Scotswood station and the nearby rail tunnel, setting it within the wider context of the transformation of Scotswood.
