Gressenhall Farm & Workhouse
Gressenhall, Dereham, Norfolk, NR20 4DR
For Heritage Open Day 2024, visitors can see temporary exhibition 'Making the Rounds: Stories of Workhouse Nurses told in Textiles' as well as a pop up trail as part of writer Daisy Henwood's project, FOUND, funded by Arts Council England. The Conservation Lab will be open at select times to showcase some of the important work going on behind the scenes to protect museum objects for generations yet to come. The entire site is open and free to all - no booking necessary.
Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse is based in a former workhouse, originally opened in 1777 as a 'House of Industry'. Now the site houses an extensive museum exploring what life was like for those who once lived and worked here, as well as collections on display that engage with the county's rich rural heritage. On the 50 acre site, Union Farm keeps rare breed animals and showcases historic methods of farming and land management, as well as being home to a stretch of the Wendling Beck, one of the rare chalk-fed waterways in the UK. Visitors can see the 1899 Panhard and 1923 Farmers Foundry engine, explore Village Row, Cherry Tree Cottage and the museum galleries, wander in the woodlands or the beautifully kept gardens, or pop into the Mardler's Rest café, giftshop and Friends of Gressenhall's secondhand bookshop.
