Greenwoods - Dewsbury's oldest shop
John Greenwood Clothing & Jewellery, 3 Church Street, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, WF13 1JJ
Greenwoods is situated in Church St in the historic town of Dewsbury and close to Dewsbury Minster. This is Dewsbury’s smallest and newest museum but it still enables visitors to see what life was like for those who lived and worked in Greenwoods from 1860 to the present day. It contains a range of shop memorabilia, artefacts, biographies and pictures of those who lived and worked here, such that visitors of all ages are able to understand more about their local history and the life of their ancestors.
The museum is within the historical shop, ‘John Greenwoods’, which itself still contains much of the original cabinetry from 1860 and additional Victorian and later fittings, whilst still remaining a fully functioning shop with a master craftsman working jeweller. Come and meet the famous ‘Bolenium Bill’, resident in the shop since the 1920s, and see what has changed over his lifetime.
