Join Dr Elisabeth Wilson in this fascinating talk about moving people from poor housing in the centre of Berwick to Highfields, nicknamed Abysinnia, on the outskirts, so called because it was being built during the Abysinnia Crisis of 1935.

The Highfields council estate on North Road in Berwick was built to rehouse people moved from poor housing in the Walkergate and Chapel Street area within the Walls. This new housing was on the edge of the town without any amenities which had its challenges. Join Elisabeth to find out more about how this all came about and what people were moving to. This talk follows on from the 2022 talk about the organisational and human aspects of slum clearance.
