Friday the Thirteenth St. Mary's Graveyard Tour

St. Marys Church, Oakwellgate, Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, NE8 2AU

  • 13 Sep 2024
  • In person

Join Dr. Katie Liddane and local historian Anthea Lang for a suitably spooky tour of our eighteenth and nineteenth century graveyard, and a look around Gateshead's medieval church!

From stone coffins to skull and cross bones memento mori, and even the burial place of a convicted witch, the grounds of St. Mary's Heritage Centre, Gateshead, are filled with history fitting for a Friday the 13th. Many of our graveyard residents have strong connections to local industry, architecture and the most significant events in the region's history. For example, find out what connects John Dobson, a wool warehouse, and Queen Victoria!

Supported by some wonderful volunteers, historian of the North East, Doctor Katie Liddane will be delivering guided tours our graveyard, telling you all about the site's long - and sometimes dark - history and its strong connections with the wider region.

Friday 13th will also be a lucky day for our visitors as we'll be displaying our rarely seen collection of artefacts and looking at the stories behind some strange headstone symbols.

There will also be family crafting activities inside the building, and the tours will be replaced by a talk if the weather is unlucky!
