The cemetery is a hilly site over about 40 acres. It's best to wear suitable footwear. There are roadways and many footpaths; some areas can only be fully appreciated by walking on grass and amongst the gravestones.
The maintenance of the site is largely done by the volunteers, although the Borough arranges grass cutting. As this is a large site, some areas are better maintained than others. The two chapels were built when the cemetery was opened in 1855 and are still both in use by the Friends and will be open to visit. As the cemetery is now officially closed, we do not now have burials unless they can be placed into an existing grave
