Flamborough Old Waterworks
The Old Waterworks, Bempton Lane, The Old Waterworks, Flamborough, East Riding of Yorkshire, YO15 1AT
Prior to 1906, drinking water in the village of Flamborough was provided by a number of private wells & horse-drawn water carts. A public supply of wholesome fresh water piped into houses only came in 1906, with the sinking of a well and construction of a wind-powered pumping station & storage reservoir on the outskirts of the village. Visitors will be able to view the 6ft diameter well, sunk to a depth of 232ft, complete with its original pumping gear; and walk inside the storage reservoir and see its unique Edwardian vaulted architecture. An interesting talk will also be given on the history of the site and some of the charactaters involved in its early operation, as well as details of the current refurbishment work to conserve the buildings and bring them back into use as domestic living accommodation.
