Exploring Stoke's Waterways

Meet outside the lodge, Spode Works, Elenora Street, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, ST4 1QQ

  • 06 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

The River Trent, its tributary the Fowlea Brook and the Trent & Mersey canal run more or less in parallel through the centre of Stoke. This walk will look at how their routes through the town have altered over time.

The walk will follow the routes of the waterways, looking at major diversions over the last few decades to the route of the River Trent because of major road developments, improvements in the cleanliness of the Trent and the Fowlea Brook over the last 50 years or so. The walk will also look at a current project being carried out by the Environment Agency which will greatly reduce the chances of the Fowlea Brook flooding and another recent project to create a more natural bed for the Trent to improve dissolved oxygen levels and encourage a more diverse biota. The walk is led by Phil Rowley and co-ordinated by Potteries Heritage Society.
