Exhibition Open Day at Providence Chapel at Throwleigh on Dartmoor

Throwleigh, Okehampton, Devon, EX20 2HZ

  • 14 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

We offer a warm welcome (with home-made teas) to Providence Chapel, Throwleigh, where you can see a special exhibition of the Dartmoor Photographs of Chris Chapman. In 2023 Providence was the winner of 2 'Open to Visitors' National Church Awards.

Visitors to our Open Day on Saturday 14 September will be able to see inside Providence Chapel and its Victorian Schoolroom. Dating back to 1839, Providence is one of the earliest Bible Christian chapels to have been built in Devon. We were delighted that in 2023 the National Churches Trust recognised our commitment to keeping our doors open by presenting us with two National Church Awards.

You will also be able to view a special exhibition of photographs by the well-known Dartmoor photographer Chris Chapman. For more than 50 years Chris has been creating a unique portfolio of Dartmoor life. The V&A Museum and the Martin Parr Foundation are among the organisations that have acquired his work. Our listed chapel is now home to a permanent collection of some of his finest images. Books about his photography and our new Souvenir Guide to Providence Chapel will be on sale at the Open Day.

We are grateful to all our supporters who include the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Devon County Council, the Methodist Church and the Devon Historic Churches Trust.
