Exhibition of Local Heritage Photographs and Information
Morley Library, Commercial Street, Morley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS27 8HZ
Morley Public Library is a Grade 2 listed building which was opened in 1906 with a grant from the Carnegie Trust. We'll show how a local, Councillor W.L. Ingle made a request for this grant with other details of its beginnings.
The wonderful archive of David Atkinson belongs to Leeds Libraries and many examples from this will be shown. In particular we will display examples of local personalities and transport in the area over the years. Much of his work has been digitised and catalogued into a searchable format.
Many locals will remember the Heritage collection of Peter Aldred which he exhibited at various places in Morley including the Market. He was somehow able to find information and photos which had eluded the rest of us. Now that he is not able to look after his collection MCA has been permitted to store much of the digitised version and some documents. We will catalogue these as time allows - this is a new project.
MCA will be presenting our recent studies of St Paul's Church, Morley which has recently closed. We are also compiling an extensive account of the people listed on the local War Memorial who were killed as a result of their service in the Second World War.
Some of us from MCA have been making a virtual tour of Morley Town Hall. The inside aspects of this are almost complete. We will be showing these off with a short PowerPoint presentation to illustrate a short history of the building. We aim to do two showings of this video at 11 am and 2 pm.
