Discover the stories of the hard-working entrepreneurial families who lived in Ashton-on-Ribble in the late 19th century, and those who also had an impact on industry abroad.

Years of research into Ashton family histories has uncovered many fascinating stories which will be shared on this walk. Ashton-on-Ribble was home to engineers, from shipbuilders to an early steam wagon manufacturer, and also to successful shopkeepers in Preston, including hatters, drapers and butchers. And there are intriguing overseas links to this area, from the development of the Russian textile industry to Florida's orange groves. By the late 19th century, there was even a photographer recording life in Ashton and Preston.

Directions:
Meet at the benches outside the Methodist Church on Wellington Road. Stagecoach bus 68 between Preston and Blackpool stops outside St Michael's church at the end of Wellington Road. There is limited on-street parking in the area.

Accessibility details

The walk is on pavements and there are dropped kerbs to cross streets. The walk covers a mile or so, and there are limited places to rest along the route.
