Acknowledged as one of the wonders of medieval engineering, the incredible structure of the Octagon Tower, suspended high over the centre of the Cathedral, was completed in 1342 and is considered the jewel in the Cathedral crown.
The fascinating tour, over 170 steps with an experienced guide, takes you behind the scenes of the lantern, discovers its fascinating history and opens up the angel doors so you can peer down into the Cathedral.
Built mainly in the 12th century, climbing the west tower rewards you with stunning views over the beautiful, historic city and the surrounding fens. The famous tower features in many well-known literary publications including Tom’s Midnight Garden.

Octagon Tower: Please note that the tour involves 170 spiral stone steps, in 4 stages. There are some narrow, enclosed staircases, with some steep/uneven stairs. Low and narrow doorways - one is just 18.5'/47cm wide. Access to open roofs with external views is weather-dependent. West Tower: Please note that the tour involves 288 spiral steps inside the stone tower with some steep and uneven stairs. Access to the open top of the tower 215 ft/66m high. You pass near radio transmitters and their frequency may adversely affect heart pacemakers.
