Eat the Archives: Crewe
Crewe Market Hall, Earle Street, Crewe, Cheshire, CW1 2BL
The story of Crewe is a story of food. Oats, ice cream, and cheeses all helped fuel the growth of the town, its industries, and its people, and have all been shining stars of its historic market.
Inspired by this history, Leo Burtin will create and share a new recipe that draws on historic menus, recipes, and ingredients lists held by Cheshire Archives, which is opening a new centre in Crewe in 2026.
He will lead this session in a hands-on way, demonstrating how to make a recipe while explaining and exploring histories of a migrating workforce, a growing industrial town with long agricultural roots, and the importance of food in connecting communities.
You’ll not only learn a new recipe but also be able to try some at the end. You’ll also take home a free recipe card and packet of ingredients so that you can prepare your own version.
Members of the archives team will be on-hand with things that have inspired the recipe, alongside historic menus and recipe books.
The demonstration will cater to all levels- you don’t need to be a local history expert or a seasoned chef to take part, and both Leo and the archives team will be more than happy to answer any questions.
Places are limited so please register in advance to take part in the event and to taste a new dish inspired by the heritage of this great town. Please let us know about any allergies or dietary requirements when registering.
