Easby, The Romantic Ruin
Easby Abbey, Richmond, North Yorkshire, DL10 7EU
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the late 1530s, abbeys across the country fell into ruin, but their history did not stop: it merely entered another, fascinating phase.
Artists, antiquarians, archaeologists, tourists and casual visitors have been drawn to medieval ruins since at least the early 1700s, drawing, painting, studying, writing and seeking inspiration and contemplation - or just a pleasant afternoon out. The tour will feature selected abbey images from the early 1700s onwards, illustrating how artists and others have looked at and represented Easby Abbey over time. These depictions give us clues about the past: how the ruins have changed, why they were a source of fascination, artistic trends, and wider social and economic issues. We can also question the way we depict and look at ancient ruins today, and consider the influences on our own 'ways of seeing'.
