Originally known as the St Edmund's District National School, Lord Ward of Himley donated the land and its foundation stone was laid by Lady Ward in August 1848. The architect, who designed the building in Tudor Gothic style, was William Bourne. Records indicate that it was built to accommodate 375 children aged 5-11. In 1881, it was reported that 'This flourishing school has been of immense value to the poorer classes of the inhabitants, having turned out some very clever boys and girls'. The school finally closed in 1974 but has found a new life as Dudley Central Mosque. Find out more by viewing the virtual tour and reading about its history in the downloadable information included.
