Dorking United Reformed Church: 'Walking the Way' display
53 West Street, Dorking, Surrey, RH4 1BS
Dorking United Reformed Church regularly follow themes, inviting people and groups of all ages to join in activities, reflections and displays connected to them. The current 'Walking the Way' theme fits perfectly with this year's Heritage Weekend theme of 'Connections, Routes and Networks'. The Way was a name given to the very early Christian Church, and Jesus described himself as 'The Way, (the truth and the life)' - the same word for both a group of people and the person they follow. Over the months leading up to the Open Days the church community will be building up a variety of imaginative displays exploring that, in particular, the manner in which people have followed 'the Way' over the centuries, and what it means to do so today.
The church that is now Dorking URC has been part of that Christian journey for over 350 of the 2000 or so years that people have been 'following the Way', for much of that time on the current site. In the Worship area, a video presentation and window displays built up from material in the church archive will help tell a lot of that story, sharing insights into the work of the church, the buildings, and the people that have trod that path over the years. The tranquil garden will contain one of the imaginative garden displays that the church is well known for in the town, built up with contributions from across the church community, from toddlers to the elderly.
The site is accessible, refreshments will be available in the Main Hall.
