One of the highlights of our collection are the photographic albums by Laszlo Torday (1890 – 1975), 2025 marks 50 years since his death.
Torday was a chemical engineer, industrialist and keen amateur photographer. He arrived in Tynemouth in January 1940 from Hungary and eventually moved to Jesmond.
His photographs reflect his interest in the streets and people of Newcastle especially of the Heaton and Jesmond area. It’s fascinating to look through and see how the city has changed, but also how many areas can still be recognised, from these wonderful images.
You can view a 1,000 of these images on our Flickr page, https://www.flickr.com/photos/newcastlelibraries/albums/72157632024528422
