During the tour you will learn about the history of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and look at the stories of some of the service personnel buried in the churchyard. Those men and women include Australian, Canadian, Dutch, French and Polish as well as British personnel. The youngest include 17 year old WAAF ACW2 Ellen Mabel Lambert who died in the service of her country. The oldest, Chief Marshal Sir Charles Stuart Burnett KCB, CBE, DSO who was 62. His service had started with the Army in the Boer War then stretched through the FIrst World War, then the inter-war years into the Second World War.
The churchyard of St Michael and All Angels is located very close to RAF Halton the military camp set up just before the start of WW1, which from 1922 was the home for RAF Apprentice Scheme training. In 1927 the Princess Mary's RAF Hospital Halton was established in the camp, providing medical care for sick and injured personnel from the armed services.
Today the churchyard is the final resting place for 104 Army, Air Force and Naval personnel from the two world wars, along with more then 160 military non-war graves. Many of the casualties buried here have links to the RAF Hilton camp.
