Corsham's Legacy of Lost Highways

A talk explaining Corsham's connections to the rest of the country through looking at maps and ancient pathways.

The National Express sweeping through Pickwick on its way to London is only the current reminder that Corsham has been on the main road for centuries – from Roman times in fact. But the major routes, and the minor tracks and lanes, have chopped and changed through the years. By examining historic maps in particular, but also the surviving features along our lost and current roads, it is possible to explore the network of communications that has enabled Corsham as a community to thrive, and its inhabitants to move around. John Chandler, a former Corsham resident, has studied the history of travel for many years. He spoke at last year’s festival and for 2024 has refined and expanded his talk.
