'Connexions' at Mount Zion Heritage Chapel

Set in beautiful countryside, Mount Zion is one of two heritage chapels in Calderdale and a Grade II* listed building. The first chapel on the Mount Zion site was built in 1773. The original sexton's cottage still exists, but the main body of the Chapel is later and dates from 1815. The Chapel is surrounded by an extensive monumental graveyard.

Although this historically significant Methodist place of worship is no longer used for its original purpose on a regular basis, it remains a vibrant space for the whole community; a reminder that people of faith created a heritage which it is important to learn from, cherish and preserve. The Chapel and monumental graveyard also tell stories of Calderdale, its people and the struggle for democracy, education, and social justice.

Our open weekend will include:

'Connexions' - a talk on the importance of routes, networks and connections in Methodist heritage; focusing on John Wesley's visits to Mount Zion and its metamorphosis into a Kilhamite, 'New Connexion' chapel (11.30 and 14.30 each day in the Chapel)
Tours of the Chapel and the monumental graveyard (12.30 and 13.30 each day, meet in the Peace Garden)
A chance to view the Horace Hird Collection of Methodist ceramics
An opportunity to view artefacts from Mount Zion's past and from chapels across Calderdale
Refreshments in the sexton's cottage and a chance to relax in the peace garden.

Directions:

By car: map and Sat Nav details Halifax HX2 8XG. From the A629, turn onto Per Lane, Upper Brockholes. By bus: The 502 – Great Northern Line – Halifax, Ovenden, Denholme, Cullingworth, Keighley, stops off at the end of Per Lane. Mount Zion is approximately a hundred metres down Per Lane on the right-hand side. On foot: A629 onto Per Lane, or Lane Head, or Pavement Lane onto Per Lane. Section 11 of the Calderdale Way, Luddenden to Brockholes, takes you to the front gates of Mount Zion.

Accessibility details

Please note although we have parking available for this event in the field behind the Chapel (weather permitting), the track to the Chapel is quite uneven underfoot. Access to the Chapel from Per Lane is available via a ramp. If necessary to park on the road, please do so with consideration for our neighbours and and please avoid blocking the farm track. Thank you. There is an external ground floor toilet, but regrettably there are no disabled toilets with wheelchair access on site.
